Why do you play rugby?

A not uncommon question I suspect - and a question that an American student called Deb Wallevand has sought to answer with this excellent short film:

The answer should come as no surprise. Friendship, the challenge, being part of a team - even the word "family" is mentioned - all things many of you have said about playing at Letchworth.

Obvious? Well what makes this particularly interesting is that the impression some of us get (and I do mean not just me in this case!) is that those who run our game do not seem to realise this. Because the entire structure of the girls' game (and to a lesser extend the women's game too) seems to be based around the largely unchallenged idea that most players are not in the game because of friendship, team and "family" but rather burning individual ambition.

Virtually everyone who runs the game seems to think that the reason why everyone is in rugby is not to play for their club with their friends, but rather to play for their county or region or ultimately the country. There is often blank incomprehension that any of you would NOT want to climb the player pathway and play representative rugby at the highest level you could.

So, who is right?
