With huge home support, playing in the main stadium in a break between games in the men's sevens, the USA opened the scoring in the first minute with a converted try. Daniel Waterman pulled the score back to 7-5, and then Katherine Merchant put England ahead before the break - her score being successfully converted to give England a 12-7 lead.
Halfway through the second half USA drew level, but with no further score the game went into sudden death - the second time the USA had been faced with a tie breaker in successive tournaments, after losing the North American/Caribbean championship in this way at the end of last year.
And for the second time the USA lost out, Heather Fisher scoring straight from the restart to give England a very narrow victory.
England and the USA are drawn together in Pool B for the World Cup - a group that both should qualify from with ease, and a draw which will keep the two sides apart... until the (perhaps) the final.
