Some rugby was also played....

Brilliant day, brilliant weather, pitches a bit hard - and some great memories from "Canada Day" yesterday.

For those that missed it a slip by Katie when in the lead on the last leg of the "Broomstick" game resulted in a 3-0 win for Canada following their wins at both "Twix" and "Crackers". We regained some pride with wins at "Over-and-Under" and the "Boatrace", but it was all over by then as our had visitors showed superior skill when it came to anything that involved eating or drinking very quickly...

However Nim stole the show with the "Ball-and-chairs" with a barn-stroming 51! "Bomber" also proved popular, especially for Robyn from Weldon who had the honour of being fourth engine...

Earlier in the day there had been some rugby as well.

To be honest I can't remember too much of the actual games - it was a long day! - but I do recall that he combined Letchworth and Sudbury team ("Letchbury") played Weldon first. It was a tight game, and we were soon 5-0 down to a well taken try in the bottom corner. This was pulled back to 5-5 at half-time. After a period of forward pressure (and I think we narrow shaded it up front) Carla crashed through to put us 10-5 up, which was cricially converted by Stamerz (?) which mean that when Weldon missed a conversion a few minutes later we retained a 12-10 lead, extended to 17-10 at the end when Sudbury's Jess touched down with the last move of the game.

Letchbury followed this with a rather tired and scrappy win over the Ely/ Peterborough/ Towcester "Barbarians" team - Hayley scoring a last minute try that gave us a 10-7 win which we probably didn't deserve against a side that had barely been introduced an hour before.

Its worth saying that Debbie from Ely, who was coaching the team, did a remarkable job in pulling this team together. They had actually drawn 10-10 with Aylesbury 45 minutes or so earlier and did pretty well against Weldon at the end - they lost that game about 17-0 I think but were certainly not outclassed.

In other other game of the day Aylesbury went down something like 24-5 to Weldon, who were probably playing at their best in that fixture having woken up from hybernation against "Letchbury" but not yet showing that they were in any way tired.
