England U20s defeated again

England went down to their second defeat of their three game season today - losing 12-7 to Wales at Taffs Well. Based on reports, it seems that a poor clearance kick and failure to make tackles lead to an early try for Wales in the first half.. The home side scored again before half-time shortly after the England flanker Hannah Field (who, as many of you will remember, played for Reading as a junior) went off with an injury. This seemed to temporarily destabilise the England scrum giving the Welsh no.8 a chance to extend the home side's lead to 12-0 at half-time. England pulled the score back to 12-7 in the second half, but that was the end of the scoring in the game.

This was the first time Wales have beaten England at U20 level, though they did win against England at the old U19 level in both 2005 and 2004. It goes some small way to make up for what has been a dreadful season for Wales at international level. As for England - many of the team still have at least another year at this level, and there are many talented players moving up from junior rugby this year. Hopefully the selection system will pick them up.
