C'mon you... erm... browns?
It was that sort of day today. Admittedly not quite as bad as the games around this weekend last year when at the end it was all but impossible to tell the difference between our U14s their opponents on that day (MK I think), but close.
This year the U14s got the decent pitch at the top of the hill. Apparently they fought bravely against a more experienced side (ie. pretty much all the county team that doesn't play at Welwyn) and got better as the game went on - a sure sign perhaps that they have not had enough games this season (which they haven't). Not sure of the final score - other than Saracens winning - but all those playing seemed to enjoy it.
The U17s reversed things a bit. Playing against a combined Peterborough and Saracens team, plus "guests" the first half was a bit one-sided - 47-0 I made it - but some inspired changes at half time, including Saracens bringing on a new scrum half and a fast attacking wing (familiar faces... seen them before somewhere...), changed things around a bit - Letchworth only shading the half 12-10 as Saracens confidence grew.
Seriously though, a word of congratulations to Emily and Fern, Hayley and Sophie who guested for Peterborough/Saracens in the first and second halves respectively - and played their hearts out for their "adopted" team. Indeed Sophie did most of the work that lead to their first try, and Hayley scored the second - putting in an impressive performance at scrum half, where she had never played before (though Nikki caught her once at least!). Its that sort of "fair play" that gets a club a good reputation and repeat fixtures in the future.
In fact in dreadful conditions, with the ball a bar of soap, driving rain and a howling wind, there was good play everywhere. Nim missed only two kicks I think despite the wind, Randy fittingly scored twice before she had to rush off to start her new career and all round it was a good game - especially in the second half - despite the conditions.
But next time we step on a field for a match its going to be a different thing entirely...
***PS. Sorry - no pictures yet as the Threlfalls were away. Hopefully I'll be able to get some from Mike & Nikki when she publishes her review of the game later in the week.
